The pattern was based on a specific spatial division of a vernacular malay house called 'Selang' - it is the other exit that leads to the rear area of the house. The spaces were developed historically according to the division of labour and to a certain extent, the division of labour based on gender separation. This statement however, was not a critique in relation to the gender division of labour but instead, emphasing the idea of conception of space and its interrelationship with other sociological elements that should be seeing in it's totality - the dynamic relations in society that is also manifested in concrete spaces.
